The CFR June 2005 Retreat at Rising Phoenix Retreat Center in Cumberland,
MD was a huge success! What a phenomenal group of women participants!
An amazing staff
team put great effort into the Retreat. Our fearless lead fishing
instructor, Susan Eggert amazed us all with tales of childhood food fights,
and the subtle art of flicking mashed potatoes across a family dinner table.
And if the mashed potatoes weren't enough, there was a whole new version of
Charlie the Trout debuted thanks to the brave and brilliant creativity of
Robin Hoofnagle (fishing instructor) and the interpretive dance she
orchestrated (Diane Pennessi and Meg Thomas being willing dancers), each and
every participant could enthusiastically identify a Mayfly from a Caddis
from a Stone fly.
All in all, a
retreat filled with great fishing, excellent friendship and sharing, and so
much laughter that our sides were all sore on Sunday night.
Thanks to the
ALL-STAR staff who include: Susan Eggert, lead fishing instructor; Diane
Pennessi, fishing instructor; Robin Hoofnagle, fishing instructor; Carolyn
Harvey, Facilities and Participant Coordinator; Dory Shipley, Medical Staff;
Barb Elsner, Psycho-Social Staff, and Pat Holden, Psycho-Social Staff. An
excellent group of River Helpers joined us as well, including Yancey Hall,
Jake Tannehill, Judy Murphy, Sue Day, Katherine and Dean Baker.
And above all are
the thirteen women who are already planning next year's reunion ... FISH ON,
SISTERS!

Dear CWA Members,
YOU DID IT AGAIN! Because of your hard work and
dedication to Chesapeake Women Anglers and Casting for Recovery - CWA in
partnership with the national CFR program put on another successful CWA/CFR
Retreat May 18th to 20th in Orkney Springs, VA. I wish you all could have
been there. The smiles, laughter, hugs and community spirit were ever
present as the participants not only enjoyed learning about the sport of fly
fishing but also getting to know each other while surrounded by the sights
and sounds of the great outdoors.
The success of the retreat would not have
been possible without the support of the entire membership of CWA. As the
CWA/CFR Retreat Coordinator, I would like to recognize and thank CWA members
who played key roles: Dotty Smith, Special Events/Fly Show Coordinator-
under the leadership of Dotty the club raised over $3,000 for CWA/CFR;
Camille Fulp, Fly Show Member Volunteer Organizer; Linda Crouch - CWA/CFR
Gift Bag Rubber Stamping Instructor and Host; Norma Kawecki - Gift Bag
Coordinator and Fishing Instructor; Kiki Galvin - Resource Coordinator and
Fishing Instructor; Carole Miller - Fishing Instructor and River Helper
Coordinator; Mary Vogelsong- Fishing Instructor; Diane Pennessi- Volunteer
Staff Coordinator; Carol Dworin - Participant Coordinator; River Helpers -
Stella Norman and Debra Aquavella; Carolyn Harvey, Karen Shoemaker and other
CWA members who contributed items for the Gift Bags; and each CWA member
(YOU!) that volunteered at Fly Fishing Shows and the
LLBean Gift Wrapping booth.

previous column)
In addition to CWA member
volunteers, I would also like to thank on-site volunteers who helped to
make the retreat a success including: Judy Abramowitz and Amanda Withrow
- Psychosocial Facilitators; Judy Macon- Medical Staff and; Kim Theodore
and Sylvia White - Massage Therapists.
On Friday, May 20th at Smith Creek,
our "River Day" could not have happened without the support and
dedication of our River Host and Hostess - Kevin and Patti Williams; and
additional River Helpers - Bob Howell; Dennis Patzig; Bob Hess; Gary
Collins and Mike Shroyer. Even though the weather was dark and stormy at
the start of our River Day, the positive energy and spirit of the
participants and volunteers were not the least bit dampened - it turned
out to be a great day on the water for all!
On behalf of CWA, I also want to
thank the staff at National CFR in Vermont – Susan, Linda, Seline, and
PJ who contributed in numerous ways to the retreat from beginning to
end!
On behalf of the 2005 CWA/CFR Retreat
participants, let me say thanks to each of you for all you did
collectively and individually. Know that there are 13 more women anglers
out there "CASTING FOR RECOVERY"! I am sure their CWA Hats are off to
each of you!
THANK YOU!
