Volunteers from the Rocky Top Chapter of the Women Marines reported for duty at the Orvis store in Sevierville, TN on December 12th in order to help out the Casting for Recovery – East Tennessee program. The gift wrapping day had been set up to benefit CFR, and Lindsay Long, Program Coordinator, made the following report: “Just as there is a special bond between sister breast cancer survivors, there is a bond between Marines, especially women Marines as they are indeed “The Fewer, The Prouder, The Women Marines.” Semper Fidelis – Always Faithful is more than just a motto; when the call for help is sent out, the Marines come without question. I did not have enough volunteers for the ORVIS event because of the Christmas season so I put a call out to the Women Marines and I had four volunteers there ready to work.”

Casting for Recovery Selected As Community Partner By Texas Tournament Committee

December 10th, 2009

Each year, the Anadarko Fishing Tournament selects one non-profit organization to be the beneficiary of their annual bass fishing tournament, “Fishing for a Cause.” This year, the tournament committee selected the Casting for Recovery – Texas program after learning about it from Paul and Gail Sparks.

On October 2-3, the 21st Annual Anadarko Fishing Tournament was held at Lake Sam Rayburn, 150 miles northeast of Houston. Austinite and Casting for Recovery alumna Marlenia Richardson was one of the participating anglers.

The tournament raised $12,185 for the Texas program! Many thanks to the APC Fishing Tournament committee and everyone who participated in this great event.

Congratulations and thanks to all!

California Program Coordinator who has been providing training and mentoring for the NZ program on behalf of CFR, will be traveling to New Zealand to co-lead the first retreat with Sherrie Feickert. Sally Stoner, a FFF certified casting instructor and member of the California and Nevada CFR teams, will also be traveling to NZ to lead the fly fishing portion of the program and deliver a casting clinic to the NZ team members before the retreat. The NZ program has arranged to cover air fare for both Peg and Sally. Sherrie Feickert wrote back to the Northern Caifornia team days after arriving home in Rotorua: “I feel profoundly blessed to have met you and to have shared a slice of CFR life with you and those amazing women. So many things to do! I have to thank you for so many precious memories and experiences I now have in my heart . They have come home with me to begin our program here in NZ. CFR Indiana Summer Alumni Reunion A Whopping Success

June 17th, 2009

in2009reuniongroup1

The third annual Indiana Casting for Recovery Reunion took place on June 13 & 14 with nearly a third of the past participants attending: all five of CFR-Indiana’s past year’s retreats were represented, and although the fishing was fun, getting together to renew friendships and catch up was the highlight of the weekend.

Thanks to generous donors, including 3M/Scientific Anglers, Albright Fishing Products, and the Orvis store in Carmel, IN, the CFR alumni were given their own tackle. The Susan G. Komen Foundation of Indianapolis, whose grant funding helps underwrite a portion of the cost of the Indiana retreat, has been a long-time supporter of the program. The 2010 CFR-Indiana reunion is tentatively planned for the weekend of June 12-13, 2009.

4th Year of “Day Camp” for CFR Alumns A Trout-Raising Success

June 17th, 2009

ffim2009_group_2For the fourth year in a row, Fly Fishing in Maine (FFIM) hosted Casting for Recovery (CFR) past participants from the New England region for a day of fishing in the beautiful Rangeley, Maine region. Fifteen FFIM volunteer guides teamed up with fifteen CFR alumni on June 6th for a full day of fly-fishing instruction, stream education, fishing, gourmet shore lunches, and friendship. The teams spread across the region and fished some of Maine’s most fabled waters from the Rapid River to the Magalloway River to Upper Dam: one team even fished a spot that President Eisenhower fished. Club President Ken Beaulieu reported “Our 4th day camp might have been the best! It was an awesome day all around. The weather was perfect, the fishing was good, and dinner – provided by the Rangeley Region Guides and Sportsman’s Association – was outstanding. We had so many laughs. I’m still not sure who gets more out of the day, the CFR ‘’sports’ or the guides. The FFIM crew is already looking forward to next year.”

CFR Alaska Team – 2009 Alaska Run for Women

Jolynne, Martha, Katie, and Jan showcase the team's creativity

Jolynne, Martha, Katie, and Jan showcase the team's creativity

On the cloudy, cool Saturday of June 13th, volunteers from Casting for Recovery- Alaska walked one or five miles in support of breast cancer awareness. More than 5,400 walkers/runners raised $120,000 to support breast cancer projects both nationally and in Alaska. Janice Schnorr, CFR volunteer, reported that the team included herself, Viki Wells, Martha Peck, Jo-Ann Marusich, Jolynne Howard, Evie Dunham, Willie Devine, Jo Ann Bantz, Sandra Arnold, and Cindi Crawford.

In addition to team runners/walkers, Katie Hickey organized the port-a-potty decoration (part of a fleet provided for the attendees). The decoration crew included Jolynne, Martha, and Jan, and Martha reported “The door was covered in purple netting over pink felt, simulating a swirling river. Atop of the purple netting were hot pink fish with words of inspiration on each, and the whole thing was crowned with a float tube. The best part, however, was the inside. Adorned with an entire school of hot pink poster board fish hanging from fishing line, the potty user had to enter through a curtain of them. Whilst sitting on the seat, the occupant was entertained by the beautifully crafted posters. There was a hand made net with a fish “caught” cfrak-2009runinside, an alder rod with a pink and purple maribou “fly” and to complete the ensemble a craftily lined urinal reassigned to be the CFR pamphlet holder.”

A special thanks to everyone for supporting the team effort in helping raise awareness of breast cancer and Casting for Recovery!
